Pizza is pretty popular over here with Pizza Hut and Domino’s making large headways, though other, smaller companies have their own twist on it. It doesn’t tend to have a lot of sauce on it and peas are basically a staple on pizzas. Why? Who knows? Corn also sometimes makes an appearance.
As for base ingredients, there are the North American staples – pepperoni, ham and pineapple, supreme – but there are a lot more gourmet flavours here. Or, depending how you look at it, experimental and/or flavours reliant on local providers. There are a lot of seafood pizzas – I once had a delicious wasabi octopus pizza at a Taiwanese pizza joint – and many that have mayo on the top. They really love that stuff here on things other than sandwiches. Lots of other meats as well – smoked chicken, grilled pork, popcorn chicken, seafood of all kinds, pieces of beef (not hamburger).
It’s interesting to see my culture re-interpreted and sold here. I guess this is how Chinese people feel when they go to a Chinese restaurant in North America.
